DEIP Addis Ababa
Posted: 2010-03-02
On 22-26 February 2010, UNU-MERIT and The Ethiopian Development Research Institute (EDRI) jointly organised the first DEIP workshop of 2010 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Almost 60 people participated in the workshop, which was deemed a great success. At this DEIP there was a particularly strong focus on sectoral innovation systems in agriculture and services (particularly, tourism), and on policies promoting non-traditional exports, FDI, and micro and small enterprises.

DEIP is an intensive one week course for policy makers in science, technology and innovation policy in developing countries and for participants from the private sector involved in strategic decision-making about technology and innovation.

Intellectual Property Rights Conference- WIPO
Posted: 2010-03-02
Bronwyn Hall
On 18-19 February, Bronwyn Hall was an invited speaker at the Korean Development Institute-WIPO Conference on Intellectual Property Rights and Economic Development in Seoul, S. Korea. Bronwyn spoke on the impact of stronger patent protection on technology transfer and technology development. She noted that whilst stronger IP rights in the host country should encourage technology transfer, its impact on technology development and innovation is more ambivalent since it can both act as an incentive for innovation, whilst being a barrier imitation, and therefore inhibit learning and catch-up.

Shyama Ramani recently organised a workshop on sanitation in India, as part of the FINISH project on sanitation. A first workshop was organised last year which primarily discussed what is meant by sustainable sanitation systems and the challenges that these face. The second workshop that will be held 8-9 April in Ooty, India will be to serious problems with the diffusion of toilets.

In further related news, Shyama believes contests are a great way to generate innovations and she has used them as an instrument on both households and masons. Now here partner in the sanitation research project FINISH, Dutch sanitation NGO WASTE is taking the competition to an All India Level. Therefore they will hold the FINISH Sanitation Challenge Contest with deadline of 1 October 2010.
